From June 9-13, 2024, our students Marc Thys Charneco and Gerally Medina Rivera participated in the AAS conference, showcasing their groundbreaking work in astronomy. Gerally presented a poster titled “Observing CH in the Trifid Nebula,” while Marc delivered a talk on “The Detection of CH in the Pipe Nebula.” Both students shared their findings on the detection and interpretation of Methylidyne (CH) in the Trifid and Pipe Nebulas, respectively. Following the conference, from June 17-22, 2024, Gerally, Jessiel, and Marc attended a workshop at NRAO/Green Bank Observatory with the Undergraduate ALFALFA Team. The workshop focused on using radio observations to study nearby galaxies, which is vital to understanding baryonic matter and galaxy evolution in the local Universe. During the event, Allison gave talks on the legacy of the Arecibo Observatory and offered insights on how to apply to graduate school.

Dr. Emmanuel Morales Butler, talk focused on “Detecting RFI in Radio Astronomy Data from the 12-m Arecibo Telescope Using the Generalized Spectral Kurtosis Estimator.” Additionally, Allison Smith presented her work titled “CH 3.3 GHz Observations of Rho Ophiuchus with the Arecibo 12-m Antenna.”
