Dr. Dibin M. George to Offer Short Course on Metamaterials and Metasurfaces in Electromagnetics

The Center for Advanced Radio Sciences and Engineering (CARSE) at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM) announces an upcoming short course titled:

“Metamaterials and Metasurfaces in Electromagnetics: Fundamentals and Applications,”
to be offered by Dr. Dibin M. George, faculty member of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

This 6-hour short course will introduce participants to the fundamental concepts and practical applications of electromagnetic metamaterials and metasurfaces, two rapidly evolving areas in modern electromagnetics and wireless systems.

The course will cover the principles of artificial electromagnetic materials, including their unique properties such as negative permittivity, negative permeability, and engineered electromagnetic responses. Participants will also explore key concepts such as unit-cell design, surface wave manipulation, and the control of electromagnetic wave amplitude, phase, and polarization through metasurface structures.

In addition to theoretical foundations, the course will include case studies and applications in:

  • Antenna engineering
  • Beam steering
  • Gain enhancement
  • Electromagnetic interference (EMI) control
  • Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces for next-generation wireless systems

The course will also introduce simulation techniques for metasurface and antenna design using industry-standard tools such as HFSS (High-Frequency Structure Simulator).

Course Schedule

  • April 21
  • April 28
  • April 30
  • May 5

Time: 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM
Location: Stefani Building, Room S-227
