CARSE and NRAO Host Three-Day Workshop Series on Radio Astronomy, Spectrum Management, and Research Funding
The Center for Advanced Radio Sciences and Engineering (CARSE), in collaboration with the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), will host a three-day workshop series designed to provide students with practical training in radio astronomy, spectrum management, and research funding opportunities.
Taking place from June 24–26, 2026, the workshop series will feature expert-led sessions covering both technical and professional development topics relevant to students pursuing careers in radio sciences, engineering, astronomy, and related STEM disciplines.
Practical Radio Astronomy Workflows
June 24, 2026 | 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Facilitated by Michael Sanchez, Scientific Data Analyst at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, this workshop will introduce participants to practical radio astronomy workflows, including calibration, imaging, and the interpretation of radio astronomy data products. Students will gain hands-on exposure to the process of transforming observational data into scientific results.
Introduction to Spectrum Management
June 25, 2026 | 8:45 AM – 5:00 PM
Led by Anja Fourie, NSF SpectrumX Acting Director for Education and Workforce Development, this workshop will explore the economic, regulatory, and technical considerations involved in managing the radio spectrum. Participants will learn how spectrum policies impact radio astronomy and wireless communications while examining real-world case studies from NRAO.
Funding and Fellowship Applications
June 26, 2026 | 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Also facilitated by Anja Fourie, this professional development workshop will provide practical guidance on preparing competitive funding and fellowship applications. Topics include identifying opportunities, developing strong research and personal statements, securing recommendation letters, and navigating the review process.
Through these workshops, students will gain valuable technical knowledge, insight into spectrum policy, and tools for advancing their academic and professional careers.
CARSE encourages all eligible students to participate in this unique learning opportunity.
